Second Sundays on Fourth - May

Our opening band for May 2018 will be the Threadbare Trio and following will be The Luxuriant Sedans.

The Luxuriant Sedans (https://www.theluxuriantsedans.com/

The Luxuriant Sedans hail from the fertile musical stomping grounds of the North Carolina Piedmont.  The band’s five members - Mike “Wezo” Wesolowski (vocals, harp); Ed Bumgardner (bass, vocals); Rob Slater (guitar); Gino "Woo Funk" Grandinetti (guitar) and Larry Carman (drums) - are veteran musicians with experience in myriad musical genres, from alternative music to country-rock to jazz, vintage soul and funk to rock ‘n’ roll.  The common ground for their backgrounds is blues, but The Luxuriant Sedans is no typical fedora-wearing, licks-off-of-records blues band.  Rather, the band’s deep musical versatility takes the blue soul in its music and adds an element of rock ‘n’ roll energy that celebrates taste and individuality.

Making Movies

Named after the third album by the Dire Straits, Making Movies started as a collaboration between brothers, Enrique and Diego Chi, both born in Santiago, Panama. Brendan Culp, a Kansas City native, and Juan-Carlos Chaurand, from Guadalajara, Mexico, joined as the group launched in 2009. The band, based out of Kansas City, Missouri, is built on a heavy foundation of Afro-Latino rhythms.

Watch their videos, including their appearance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert.

The Donkeys

Like Pitchfork said: The Donkeys are a Californian band through and through. There’s no escaping it. A four-piece from San Diego, they’ve spent the past few years developing a close relationship to distinctly homegrown source materials, bridging the gap between the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Buffalo Springfield, and the Grateful Dead.

Have a listen.

Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba

Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba returns to the block for August's SSO4 celebration! To borrow from their own biography, the musicians take West African dance music into the North Carolina Piedmont. That's where Cissokho, a griot born to a family of professional musicians in Senegal, makes his transplanted home.

Get a little listen on the Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba YouTube channel.

Laila Nur

With no formal musical background, Laila Nur played her first show in 2010 just months after teaching herself to play guitar and sing. Five years later, she is one of North Carolina’s most exciting emerging artists, with her inventive and intuitive approach to guitar, and charged lyrical content. Playing hints of folk, funk, soul, rock, and blues, this solo artist has gained a dedicated following.

Bombadil

“Quirky, multi-textured, wildly inventive, eclectic, and hugely enjoyable,” “…a combination of open-minded chamber folk and the bright and sunny pop music of the 1960s,” “Syd Barrett meets The Beatles,” are among recent accolades for Bombadil, a band that over the past year has been building a steady buzz.

The Genuine

Some years ago, The Genuine was born when husband and wife Matthew Allivato and Katelyn Allivato wrote their first song together entitled "The Spinning." In August of 2012, Devin Forkel added percussion, and not long thereafter, The Genuine grew again with the addition of Gunnar Nagle on guitar and vocals. The band commits to "bend and grow with every song we sing."
